What is the difference between white thermal paste and gray thermal paste? Choosing the best of the best - thermal paste. Prices

In order to decide what the best thermal paste is today, it is worth considering the concept itself, what kind of product it is and what its use is for. Every year, and as experts recommend twice a year, you need to do a total cleaning of your laptop. Removing accumulated dust, as well as timely replacement of the thermal conductor that has dried out during this time and has lost its properties, significantly reduces the chances of overheating and failure of the computer. Having considered reviews of popular thermal pastes on the market, as well as enlisting expert opinion, the Marka.guru portal has prepared a rating, which makes it much easier to decide which thermal paste is the most effective and best in terms of ease of application.

Properties determine the quality and effectiveness of the product. So, the best thermal paste in its properties should have:

  1. Thermal conductivity, this is the main characteristic on which the operating principle of the product is based. The elements that heat up the most are covered with a conductor to lay a “bridge” to the cooling system.
  2. Low thermal resistance The lower it is, the more confident we can say that the chosen product is truly the best thermal paste available for purchase.
  3. The right consistency, this characteristic depends on the level of professionalism and frequency of use of the paste by the consumer; usually, users choose a thick, dense product, which is easier to level without creating cavities with air.
  4. Resistant to temperature fluctuations, otherwise the loss of properties will occur before the deadline.
  5. Effective composition, here lies more a question of price, since products based on copper, silver and gold have the best properties, while cheap ones based on zinc oxide or polydimethylsiloxane liquid, their thermal conductivity is lower, as well as the price.

And now directly to the products that were included in the rating and have earned the trust of customers.

Conclusion

Proper care of computer equipment and timely adoption of measures to prevent overheating of the processor and video card can extend its operation for many years.

It often happens that a computer has been working for three or four years, and suddenly it starts to slow down fiercely. Just a month ago, my favorite game was running around like crazy, but now it’s barely crawling. And the browser has become noticeably more thoughtful when you open more tabs. You check for viruses - clean. Do the coolers also seem to be spinning properly? And if you run some informative utility, like CPU-Z or GPU-Z, then it suddenly turns out that the processor and/or graphics chip quickly heats up to an impressive 60-70 degrees even in normal mode, and under load - almost 100. What happened?

What happened was most likely banal. Dust has accumulated in the case and radiators, and the thermal paste located between the chips and radiators has dried out. And if dealing with dust is relatively easy (the main thing is not to stick the hose of a vacuum cleaner turned on at full power into the computer), then with thermal paste everything is a little more complicated. Just a little.

What is thermal paste actually used for?

The chip is always lubricated with thermal paste before installing the radiator. From the name one can assume that this mass of white or silver color does something with heat, but in fact its role is much more banal. If you simply press the heatsink against the processor or graphics chip, there will still be a thin layer of air between them. And air is a very poor conductor of heat. Simply disgusting. Accordingly, the role of the paste is to fill the empty space and squeeze out the air. Between you and me, paste also lets heat through no matter. Significantly worse than metal. But much better than air.

It is in our interests that the layer of paste is as thin as possible. Because the more it is, the longer the heat path from the processor to the radiator. Therefore, drive away the desire to lubricate the chip from your heart: one drop strictly in the center is more than enough. When installing the radiator, it itself will flatten it over the area of its base.

There are many types of thermal paste. Just out of curiosity, I went to a computer store near my house and counted 21 items. And the range of prices is impressive - from 77 to 1600 rubles. Which one should I take?

The answer is simple: any. Absolutely any that costs less. And she will cope with her responsibilities perfectly. Because the main thing is to eliminate the notorious air gap, and any paste can handle this. And the rest is marketing shamanism, bordering on nonsense. A difference of a couple of degrees has absolutely no effect on anything.

My choice since the last century has been KPT-8 paste. A tube or syringe with it (packaging varies) costs from 100 rubles. And if used carefully, it lasts for a very long time. I still haven’t used up the tube that was given to me, scary to say, in 1999.

This reserve is enough to service a small city

And please do not fall for fairy tales about a miracle paste with particles of silver and other metals, which supposedly works wonders. Cleanliness in the case and the absence of dust between the fins of the radiator are the source of miracles, and the paste is only a modest assistant. The actively advertised Arctic MX-4 paste costs 4-6 times more than KPT-8, but in real conditions it gives a gain of several degrees, which does not at all affect the speed and reliability of the computer.

It is worth noting that in a desktop computer, changing the paste on the processor and video card is very simple, and anyone who is not afraid of a screwdriver can handle it. The only thing is that when removing the heatsink from the video card, you can damage the warranty sticker, but the paste on it usually dries out no earlier than after a couple of years, and by that time the warranty has already expired. Using a soft dry cloth, remove the remaining old paste from the chip and radiator, apply a little new paste and put everything back together. It is impossible to damage the chip and its surroundings with KPT-8 paste, it does not conduct electricity (unlike analogues with metal dust, so it can shorten the time). Before the procedure, you can watch inspiring videos on Youtube.

Everything in a laptop is also very easy to lubricate, but there are models with a rather bizarre design of the case, which is difficult to disassemble if you’re not used to it. If you feel blocked, don’t be nervous and don’t break anything. It’s better to take the laptop to a workshop, where the procedure for cleaning it from dust and lubricating it with paste usually costs about 1000 rubles. More expensive than a tube of KPT-8, of course, but buying a new laptop is also not cheap.

Arctic is a Swiss brand that develops components for cooling computer components, including fans and thermal pastes. And since 2010, the company has also been producing computer peripherals, as well as various multimedia products. For review, we took one of their popular thermal paste models - MX-4, which has a high thermal conductivity of 8.5 W/(m K). This is quite a decent indicator, which will allow for good heat removal from the central or graphic processors. In some situations, its use can help out when a standard cooler is installed, which does not always cope well in difficult conditions. Separately, it is necessary to say about the viscosity of the paste - 870 P (Poise). This is exactly the case when the substance is neither very liquid nor very thick. According to numerous reviews, it is quite easily applied to the surface of the processor, both with a credit card and a special spatula. Why is this so important? The fact is that the thinner the layer of thermal paste, the more efficient the heat transfer between the processor and the cooler will be, that is, the thermal paste will show everything that it is capable of. So, if you are new to this business and do not want to take risks, then we recommend this model. We would also like to mention the density of the composition, which is 2.5 g/m³ - this parameter is closely related to viscosity and together they determine the overall consistency of the paste. Arctic MX-4 is sold in small tubes of 2, 4, 8 and 20 grams, so you can easily choose the size that suits you.

Zalman ZM-STG2

Quality proven over time

The Zalman company was founded in South Korea in 1999 and today is one of the leaders in the production of cooling systems for computers. But, in addition to manufacturing thermal paste and coolers, the company produces power supplies, PC cases, keyboards, mice, and so on. Among the best thermal paste models in our review is ZM-STG2. The model comes in a 3.5-gram syringe and the main characteristics that should be noted, of course, are its thermal conductivity. It is 4.1 W/(m K) and, if we compare the models presented here, it becomes clear that this is not the best indicator. However, for basic cooling of a computer with an unoverclocked processor, this will be sufficient. But you should pay attention to the installed cooler - if with it the processor heats up and reaches temperatures above 80°C, then you should take care of installing a more powerful cooler.

As for viscosity, we did not find any mention of this parameter, but, as tests show, the paste has a fairly good viscosity and is at the same time a little sticky. It is noted that it is more difficult to apply than the same MX-4 from Arctic and in fact the paste may curl up slightly when applied, so you need to have some skill. So if you want to carry out preventive maintenance on your PC’s cooling system, then you need a little patience and confidence - in return you will get good cooling with high-quality thermal paste, which will last you at least a year.

The younger model will suit most

Next up is another thermal paste model from the well-known Arctic company, whose name is MX-2. This paste was one of the most popular in its time until a newer version came out. This model is a little simpler than the older model and has a thermal conductivity of 5.6 W/(m K), which is higher than that of other competitors, which means this model should not be overlooked in any case. To begin with, it should be noted that the good price-performance ratio allowed this thermal paste to become one of the best models among overclockers. By the way, one of their main goals is to keep the temperatures of overclocked components as low as possible, so this paste is definitely suitable for a regular PC. Speaking about the consistency of the mixture, I would like to note a fairly good viscosity, which is 850 P. But the density of the model is quite high and has an indicator of 3.96 g/cm³, so the paste is applied with a certain effort. However, if you have patience and some skill, you can still achieve a uniform and thin layer, which in turn will ensure effective heat transfer between the cooler and the processor. What's convenient is that syringes are available in sizes of 4, 8 and 30 grams, which allows you to make the right choice based on your needs.

A set of thermal paste and something else

Let's consider thermal paste from the company inRobert, model GD900. Thermal paste comes in the usual small syringes, perhaps even too small - only one gram in volume. That is why we are considering a set of ten pieces, which in total gives us ten grams of a good thermal interface. The thermal conductivity of the model is quite acceptable 4.8 W/(m K). So, we advise all those who are looking for the most inexpensive, but at the same time high-quality thermal paste to take a closer look at this one. We also note a fairly good density of 2.3 g/cm³. This is a little less than other models in the review, but the paste is still quite thick and does not spread too much when applied to the processor. By the way, in the kit you will find not only ten small syringes, but also a plastic spatula for evenly applying the paste. It should be noted here that not everyone is comfortable using a spatula, so the kit also includes two rubber fingertips, which will allow you to more accurately feel the thickness of the applied layer. But this requires some experience, because the layer may turn out to be uneven, and this will lead to deterioration in thermal conductivity. Generally speaking, such a set would be an excellent choice for both ordinary users and those who clean PCs. In the latter case, it is much more convenient to carry a small syringe 9 cm long, which is enough for several times.

Masters' choice

Thermal paste cannot always be supplied in disposable bags or small syringes - experienced technicians in service centers often choose larger containers. Such a model is also presented in our review - LEORY HY510. Thermal paste is packaged in a plastic jar with a capacity of 27 grams. But its main difference, besides the increased mass, is method of applying the paste itself. The fact is that using a syringe, you can squeeze out the amount of paste that you need, and then carefully distribute it over the surface of the CPU. In the case of such a jar, you will have to take the required amount of paste yourself, using a special spatula or even a finger in a fingertip - this is why beginners avoid this packaging option. But experts, on the contrary, value it because the volume of paste can last for a very long time, even taking into account the frequency of use. At the same time, such users have enough experience to determine by eye the amount of paste required to apply a thin layer.

As for the characteristics, this model has a thermal conductivity of only 1.93 W/(m K). Compared to other models, this thermal paste does not look the most effective, but in practice it turned out that the difference is not that big. For example, this model and a model with a thermal conductivity of 4.8 W/(m K) were used on the same computer, and the difference in the stability test was only about 2 degrees. The difference was slightly greater when the computer was idle - 31°C for our sample and 24°C for our competitor. So, despite its rather weak characteristics, LEORY HY510 thermal paste is still worthy of your attention, especially considering its low cost.

The laptop cooling system often operates in extreme modes. As a result, it is extremely important to correctly select the most effective thermal paste, which, even in such harsh conditions, allows for normal heat exchange between the processor surface and the heatsink. Next, we’ll tell you what you need to pay attention to when purchasing a thermal interface, as well as what thermal paste you should choose for your laptop.

What to look for when buying thermal paste

If you purchase products from a manufacturer unknown to you, first of all pay attention to the data written on the packaging. Typically the following parameters are specified:

  1. Thermal conductivity, W/(m K) is the most important parameter of any thermal interface. For a laptop, try to purchase pastes with the highest value.
  2. Thermal resistance. Also sometimes indicated on the packaging. This is the reciprocal of thermal conductivity; accordingly, the lower it is, the better.
  3. Plastic. This property is important primarily in terms of the convenience of applying thermal paste to the surface of the processor. For users who have not previously used it, it is better to choose a more flexible material. It spreads more easily over the surface of the processor and is easier to remove later.
  4. Resistance to temperature changes. With constant temperature fluctuations, which is inevitable during the operation of a laptop, the thermal interface simply dries out. A good wear resistance indicator for thermal conductive paste is one year, after which it must be replaced during periodic cleaning of the laptop from dust.
  5. The cost of the material depends on its composition and weight in the package. Often one syringe contains 4 grams. paste, but sometimes it can be only 2.5 grams, or even less. Moreover, the tubes are often wrapped with an opaque film, as a result of which it is impossible to visually assess the amount of thermal paste in it.

It should be noted that even the highest characteristics of pastes written on the packaging do not guarantee their exclusively positive performance. Manufacturers sometimes deliberately overestimate, for example, the thermal conductivity indicators specified in the specification, as a result of which cheaper thermal interfaces sometimes perform better in practice than their expensive counterparts.

A few words about hot melt adhesive

A significant difference between thermoplastic glue and thermal paste is that under the influence of elevated temperature it changes its state of aggregation, turning into a liquid form from a solid.

This material is rarely used in laptops, since its liquid form provides fairly high thermal conductivity, displacing air from microscopic irregularities on the surface of the processor and radiator.

However, hot melt adhesives usually go into a liquid state at 100 degrees, which is already very high for a crystal. At operating temperatures of 70-80 degrees, this material cannot provide the quality of heat transfer that is achieved when using heat-conducting pastes. And it will be more difficult to remove old dried glue when cleaning the cooling system.

Comparing thermal pastes

Please note that not all pastes are available for free sale. Sometimes they can only be obtained by purchasing a certain brand of cooler. But domestic brands KPT-8, AlSil-3, foreign ARCTIC MX-2 and 3, Arctic Silver Matrix, Coolage CA-CT3, Deep Cool Z9, etc. are widely available. Let’s look at the ratings of some of them in more detail, so that each user can decide on which paste to send your choice.

ARCTIC MX-2, MX-3 and MX-4

These thermal pastes are produced by the Swiss company Arctic. MX-2 can be purchased in 30, 8 and 4 g packs, MX-3 is sold only in a 4 g syringe. The paste has an advanced formula and is more suitable for overclocking enthusiasts, although this is not relevant for laptops. The declared difference in temperatures of these two samples is only 2.5 degrees. These pastes do not conduct electricity, so they are safer for the processor and board components in case of accidental contact.

These materials are identical in color, but their consistency is different. MX-2 is more viscous and flexible, which makes it easier to apply. MX-3 is quite difficult to apply in a thin, even layer to the surface, which is why, in fact, it has already been discontinued, although remnants can still be purchased. MX-4, on the contrary, does not have this drawback, but has a higher thermal conductivity than MX-2.

Arctic Silver 5

This is no longer a new thermal paste, but it is still the choice of many, since the paste has been time-tested and is still a standard of quality. There are 3.5 and 12 gram packages on sale; its thermal conductivity is the highest among most other thermal interfaces - 8.7 W/(m K).

The binder used here is not silicone, but a proprietary composition of synthetic oils. As a result, it strongly sticks to any parts, but despite this, even an untrained user will find it quite easy to apply it to the surface of the processor. This material also does not conduct electric current, and does not dry out or flow over time.

Arctic Silver Matrix

This is a budget version of the thermal paste discussed above. It is sold in a syringe without packaging, 2.5 g. The consistency of this thermal interface is quite thick and viscous, but despite this it is applied to the processor quite easily.

Coolage CA-CT3 Nano

This thermal interface is a product of the well-known Skolkovo. The consistency is quite thick, but very plastic; the paste itself is sticky. Perhaps, as the name suggests, due to the presence of nanoparticles, the material is spread into a very thin and even layer, while the thermal conductivity of the Coolage CA-CT3 Nano is stated to be quite good - more than 5 W/(m K).

The paste also has dielectric properties and does not dry out for a long time, as a result of which it will also behave very well on any laptop model.

Which thermal paste is best for a budget laptop?

The thermal interfaces discussed earlier, with a few exceptions, are quite expensive, have excellent thermal conductivity, and high wear resistance. They are best used in gaming devices where maximum performance is required from the cooling system.

If you plan to clean and replace the thermal paste with a regular office laptop, used mainly for working on the Internet or with documents, you can easily limit yourself to the cheap domestic AlSil-3.

Its rating is low due to its rapid drying on the heat transfer surface. Because of this, it quickly loses its performance characteristics, and its thermal conductivity is only about 0.8 W/(m K), which will be clearly too low for laptops.

Content

Caring for your computer/laptop is an important procedure that needs to be given close attention. This is especially true for cooling the processor - one of the main elements of a PC. The fight against high temperatures involves the systematic replacement of thermal paste - a substance that prevents key parts of computer hardware from overheating.

Why do you need thermal paste on a processor?

A viscous liquid called thermal paste must be applied to the processor before installing a heatsink on it. Many people are mistaken that the mass is needed to quickly cool the chip: in fact, it serves one purpose - rapid thermal conductivity from the chip to the cooler, which removes hot air. This process is very important for a computer or laptop, because otherwise the processor (main or video card) may simply burn out. Then a replacement will be required, and this PC part is not cheap.

Replacing the thermal paste on the processor is advisable every time you clean the laptop, and the operation itself requires the utmost care and attention. Improper application of the substance can cause harm to the computer and ultimately lead to the purchase of important parts. One tube should be enough for several planned care procedures. It is advisable to change the thermal conductive mass on both the motherboard and the video card at once, since disassembling and assembling a computer is not such a simple matter.

Which thermal paste to choose for the processor

With the advent of a large number of equipment on the market that require constant monitoring of thermal conductivity, more and more manufacturers are offering their own thermal pastes for purchase. The choice is really wide, but you should pay attention to the quality of the product. In household appliance stores you can find both domestic and foreign companies specializing in pastes. The most famous lubricant on the Russian market is KPT-8, which, although it is quite old (and it was invented in the USSR), is distinguished by its high characteristics and flattering user reviews.

Domestic thermal pastes that stand out among the rest include Alsil from GM-Inform. The main elements of this product are aluminum nitride and high quality silicone (for viscosity). I would also like to note the choice of such manufacturers as Titan Silver Grease, Zalman, Gelid GC-Extreme and Noctua NT - these foreign cooling liquids in syringes have passed all quality tests and easily cope with all the tasks. The price of all these products is low, so everyone can afford such heat protection for their computer.

Price of thermal paste for processor

If you suddenly urgently need thermal paste for your processor, you should know that it is inexpensive - from 200 to 500 rubles. Agree, this is not a very high price for such a useful and effective thing. The product can easily be ordered/purchased in an online store (order with delivery in Moscow and other parts of Russia) or purchased at retail points of sale (home appliance supermarkets).

Below is a comparison table of top lubricants with differences in thermal conductivity coefficients and prices. All of them show excellent efficiency results as coolers. The choice of one mass or another depends solely on the buyer. Those people who figured out how to properly apply thermal paste to the processor and performed all the steps correctly will not notice a big difference in the performance of system cooling.

How to Apply Thermal Paste to a CPU

The process of removing old and applying new lubricant to the main parts of a laptop or PC is labor-intensive and painstaking. Before replacing the thermal paste on the processor, you need to do a number of certain sequential preparatory manipulations. For example, remove the laptop cover without damaging the insides, and clean the entire work area of dust (you can use a vacuum cleaner). How to properly apply thermal paste to a processor:

  1. After superficially cleaning the laptop from dust and debris, use a screwdriver to disconnect the heatsink from the processor.
  2. Use a cotton swab soaked in alcohol to remove any previous thermal paste from the chip.
  3. When changing thermal paste, be careful to ensure that the new layer is thin and distributed over the entire surface of the processor.
  4. Take the tube with one hand, squeeze out a small amount of mass (several grams) directly onto the chip, distribute over the entire area using any plastic card or other device.
  5. Try not to stain the surface of the motherboard with heat-conducting mass and do not touch the contacts.
  6. After the procedure, without allowing the working material to dry, “plant” the radiator back, tightly pressing the paste between it and the chip.
  7. Do this procedure with the video card processor.
  8. Do not forget to carefully tighten all the screws without damaging the integrity of the computer hardware.
