Script for extracting images from Windows Spotlight
Really cool pictures periodically appear on the Windows 10 lockscreen. How can I save them for myself (to cover my desktop, for example)? This cannot be done directly, but there is still one way.
Windows 10 stores these images (and a few other things) directly on your computer as files with a custom extension. Our task is to find the location where the screensavers are stored, copy them to a more convenient location and assign the files the “correct” extension. Let's get started!
1. Make sure Windows 10 shows hidden files and folders on your computer. To check this, open Explorer and click on the View tab. There should be a check mark opposite the Hidden elements item.
2. Through Search, go to %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets
You will be taken to an Assets folder with a large number of files.
3. Copy all the files into a separate folder and place it in a convenient place for you - for example, on your desktop.
4. In the new folder, click File - Open Command Prompt - Open Command Prompt as Administrator. 
5. Enter the following command: ren *.* *.jpg 
6. Return to the folder. Now there are Windows 10 screensaver photos mixed in with the “garbage”. It’s easy to separate the wheat from the chaff – just sort the files by size. The largest ones will be at the top. These are the ones we need, everything else can be safely deleted.
The lock screen of the latest version of Windows additionally performs an informational function: it displays the time and date, important notifications, and even some system applications. After a user-specified period of inactivity, the computer is locked, after which you must enter a password to log into your account. On a business computer or PC where several people work, the function is very useful, but for a user who uses a laptop alone, this feature is not needed.
Let's consider both cases: for the first, how to configure the lock screen in Windows 10, using its new features (displaying a notification, a slide show as the background), and for the second, how to deactivate its appearance.
Replacing the background
Windows 10 developers have provided the ability to set a background image on the lock screen. This is done as follows.
- Open the Charms panel and go to “Options”.
- Select the “Personalization” item and go to the “Lock Screen” tab.
For reference: in Windows 10 it is possible not only to select a background image, but also to set a slide show in its quality, as on the desktop.
- In the “Background” drop-down menu, select “Photo” and click “Browse”.
- Set the path to the raster image in the standard file selection dialog and click “Select image”.
After this, a small preview block of the current appearance of the lock screen will appear at the top of the window. The next time you lock your computer, you will see the selected picture as the background.
In order to set a sequence of pictures as the background of the lock screen, in the third step, select “Slideshow”.
Click “Add folders” or “Images” to select a directory with graphic files or select pictures, respectively.
By going to “Advanced Slide Show Options” you will be able to customize the frame display settings for yourself.

Setting up applications
Scrolling a little lower in the dialog for additional slide display settings, we will see a block responsible for adding applications, the status data of which will be displayed on the lock screen.

Then click on the icon of the application itself.
The changes take effect the next time Windows 10 is locked.
Deactivating the lock window
For the second case, when one person is working on a computer with Windows 10 or the lock screen is not needed, we will figure out how to disable it using both methods.
Method one
- Launch the Group Policy Editor using the search bar or the “gpedit.msc” command.
System commands are entered into the command interpreter, launched via “Win + R” or the search line.
- Go to the “Personalization” directory, located along the path shown in the screenshot.
- We find the option “Prohibit display of the lock screen” and double-click on it.
- In the left block of the window, move the trigger switch to the “On” position and click “OK”.
After Windows 10 restarts, the screen will turn off.
Method two
In the second method, you need to launch the Registry Editor.
- This is done using the “regedit” command entered into the “Run” window.
- Go to the thread located at:
- Call the context menu of the free area of the right frame of the screen and select creating a new 32-bit string key - DWORD.
- We enter its name as “NoLockScreen”, that is, the absence of a lock screen, select the hexadecimal number system and set logical unit as the value of the generated parameter.
- Restart Windows 10 to apply the changes.
